EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
