Trump Demands Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on social media early Wednesday. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements come alongside the arrival of state military personnel in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of elected officials checking his power. What's next on the path to complete authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, military units from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden hellhole", despite police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, including murders.

That day, 200 state guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with another 300 Illinois guard personnel preparing to mobilize, per sources. Officials reportedly stated the troops would not perform police functions but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers in combat attire with state guard insignia were spotted at the US army reserve center in the town. Trucks marked "Disaster Relief" dropped off sanitation facilities and other supplies. Trailers were set up in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered no-fly zones over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has escalated immigration enforcement in Chicago in recent weeks, triggering demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and risky".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

The mayor also signed an executive order on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for enforcement actions.

The governor has charged Trump of using troops as "political props" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that the president is trying to "justify and normalize the deployment of military personnel under his personal authority."

The historic federal law restricts the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has said he would be prepared to activate the Insurrection Act, which permits a commander-in-chief to send active duty military in regions that are unable to put down an insurrection or are resisting federal law.

After beginning his second term, Trump has sent or discussed sending troops to over ten cities, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, arguing that the military presence is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime nationwide has declined in recent years. In the city, for instance, homicides were down nearly one-third to 278 through August, according to police data.

A recent poll released on that day revealed that most Americans oppose the sending of troops without an external threat.
